What Base44 actually is

There are two separate products under one account.

App Builder lets you build real business tools - CRMs, booking systems, online stores, internal dashboards - by describing them in plain English, with no code.

Superagent is an autonomous AI agent that works in the background without you prompting it each time, handling things like WhatsApp replies, email, and scheduling on its own.

Base44 was founded in 2025, acquired by Wix later that year, passed 10 million users by August 2026, and now runs its own foundation model (shipped mid-2026) instead of relying entirely on third-party AI. Real pricing (verified October 2026)

Free - $0/month. Up to 5 apps, 25 message credits and 100 integration credits per month. Base44 states explicitly that a complete, working app can ship on the free plan - it isn't a crippled trial.

Starter - $16/month billed annually (or $20/month month-to-month). Unlimited apps, 100 message credits, 2,000 integration credits, and a custom domain connect.

Higher tiers - Builder at $40/month, Pro at $80/month, Elite at $160/month - add more credits, choice of AI model and GitHub integration; Pro and Elite add early access to beta features and Elite adds premium support. Most people building one or two real tools never need to go past Starter.

Where the free plan runs out

25 message credits is enough to test one small idea, not to actually build and iterate on something you'll keep using - real building means going back and forth, and that cap gets used up fast. The 5-app limit means you can't keep more than a handful of drafts or projects going at once. And integration credits jump from 100 on Free to 2,000 on Starter - a 20x increase - which matters the moment you connect anything real: a calendar, a payment processor, a CRM, an email account. If you're just testing an idea, Free is genuinely enough. If you're building something you intend to actually use, Starter removes the ceiling for $16-20/month.

One thing worth knowing: you own what you build. Two-way GitHub sync exports your full source code to your own repository any time, so nothing is locked to the platform if you ever want to leave.

The honest complaints

Trustpilot scores it about 2.8 out of 5 across close to 900 reviews (September 2026), and the recurring theme is credits getting consumed debugging bugs the AI itself introduced, rather than new work.

Cancellation and refunds are reported as harder than they should be - one reviewer described paying $300 in a month and getting roughly $30 back. Annual plans lock you in for the year. A handful of users have reported accounts deactivated with no clear explanation, or losing access to their own app's data after a suspension.

Separately, some Base44 builders have said on X, responding to a Superagent feature update, that the app-builder side feels less polished than it used to, with design quality unfavourably compared to Lovable's. That's a real, specific weak spot worth knowing about going in. Not a dealbreaker for everyone, but relevant if visual polish out of the box matters to you.

What people have actually built

Two examples with real, published outcomes. The verdict

Is Base44 worth it? Yes, with one specific caveat. The free plan is built for testing, not for running something - start there and you'll know within a day whether the credit limits are already in your way. But if you already know what you want to build and you're going to be iterating on it, which is what actually building a tool looks like, Starter's 20x jump in integration credits and unlimited apps is the difference between a working tool and a stalled prototype, for $16 a month. That math is straightforward. The honest caveat, from the complaints above, is that Base44 still isn't the platform for someone who wants a finished product without touching a single prompt themselves.
