Base44 vs Claude Code: Different Tools, and Why Many Builders End Up Using Both
One is an app builder with hosting included, the other is a coding agent in your terminal. Price, fit, and the exact plan you need to connect them
By Shlomi, founder of DoitWithAI | Updated | Base44 facts rechecked October 9, 2026
Quick answer
Base44 is a no-code app builder: you describe the app, it builds and hosts it, with the database and user logins included. Free to start, then $16/month billed annually or $20 monthly. Claude Code is a coding agent that runs in your terminal and edits real code; it needs a Claude Pro ($20/month, $17 annually) or Max (from $100/month) subscription, or API billing, plus your own hosting and backend. If you cannot code, Base44. If you can, Claude Code. If you want speed and control, build in Base44 and connect Claude Code to the same app, which needs Base44's Builder plan ($40/month annually) as of October 2026.

They are not the same kind of tool
Most "Base44 vs Claude Code" pages pretend this is a fair fight. It is not, and knowing why saves you money.
Base44 is a product. You open a browser, type "a booking page for my clinic with reminders", and you get a working web app with a database, logins, hosting and a domain option. You never see a server. 10 million people have built on it, most of them without writing a line of code.
Claude Code is a tool for people who already have a codebase, or are willing to start one. It runs in your terminal (or your editor), reads your files, writes and runs code, and talks to you about what it is doing. It does not host anything, store anything, or give your users a login screen. You bring the project, the database, the deployment. It brings a very good engineer who never sleeps.
So the honest question is not "which is better". It is "do I want a finished app, or do I want to write software?" And, for a growing number of people, "can I have both?"
Base44 vs Claude Code at a glance
| Base44 | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | No-code app builder with hosting | AI coding agent in your terminal |
| Who it is for | Non-coders, owner-operators, side hustlers | Developers, technical founders, people learning to code |

| Entry price | $16/mo billed annually, $20 monthly | Claude Pro $17/mo billed annually, $20 monthly |
| What you get for it | A live app: database, auth, hosting, integrations, email | Code in your repo; everything else is yours to supply |
| Backend | Built in | Whatever you set up (Supabase, Postgres, your own server) |
| Hosting | Included | Not included |
| Background AI agent | Superagent, included on every plan | Claude Code can automate tasks in your repo; not a business assistant |

| Learning curve | An afternoon | Weeks, unless you already code |
| Ceiling | Base44's platform | None |
Pricing: what you really pay
| Base44 | Claude Code (via Claude subscription) | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0: 25 message credits (max 5/day), 100 integration credits, up to 5 apps | Claude Free exists, but it does not include Claude Code |
| Entry | Starter $20/mo, $16/mo annual: 100 message + 2,000 integration credits, unlimited apps, own domain | Pro $20/mo, $17/mo annual ($200 billed up front): includes Claude Code with usage limits |
| Middle | Builder $50/mo, $40/mo annual: 250 + 10,000 credits, GitHub sync, connectors, backend functions, phone and webhooks for Superagent | Max from $100/mo: 5x or 20x Pro usage, monthly billing only |
| Team | Pro $100/mo ($80 annual), Elite $200/mo ($160 annual), Enterprise custom | Team Standard $25/seat ($20 annual), Premium $125/seat ($100 annual); Enterprise $20/seat annual plus usage |
| Pay per use | None; upgrade the plan | API: Sonnet 5.5 $2 in / $10 out per million tokens; Opus 5.5 $4 / $20 |
| Hidden cost | Credits burned on rework | Hosting, database, domain, your time |
One note on reading that table: the Base44 number includes the app running. The Claude Code number does not. Claude Pro plus a free Supabase project plus free hosting can total $20 a month, but you wire it, and when it breaks at 11pm you are the on-call engineer.
Base44's credits are the thing to understand before you pay: message credits build, integration credits run, neither rolls over. See Base44 credits explained and the full plan table in Base44 pricing.
Who should use which
Choose Base44 if
- You run a service business and want one tool for bookings, clients, invoices or a portal, by next week
- You have never opened a terminal and do not want to
- You want a fixed monthly bill with hosting and a database included
- You want an AI agent that works across your WhatsApp, Slack and Gmail while you are busy (see our Base44 Superagent review)
Choose Claude Code if
- You already have a codebase, or you are a developer starting one
- You need infrastructure Base44 does not offer (your own database engine, custom servers, odd integrations)
- "Owning the code outright" is non-negotiable from day one
- You are building the thing you intend to raise money on, and investors will read the repo
Choose both if
- You want the first version live this week, and a real codebase by next month
- You are a freelancer who prototypes in Base44 for clients and hands off code to their developer
- You are a "can read code, cannot write it fast" builder who wants an AI engineer on the parts Base44's chat gets wrong
That last group is bigger than people admit, which is why the next section exists.
The use-both workflow (and the plan you need)
Nobody frames this, so here it is. Base44 documents two official ways to put an external coding agent on a Base44 app, and Claude Code is named in the docs as a supported one.
Route 1: connect Claude Code to the Base44 cloud sandbox. No cloning, no local install of the app. Base44's "Bring your own agent" docs say: use the CLI for an agent that runs on your machine, such as Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. The steps:
- Build the first version in Base44's chat. Pages, database entities, logins, the ugly first draft. This is what Base44 is fast at.
- In the app editor, click Send to Coding Agent. Base44 generates the prompt for you. (Not available for mobile apps or apps with unmanaged source code.)
- Install the Base44 CLI (Node.js 20.19 or newer), run base44 login, and point Claude Code at the app using its app ID and the app's README. Or add the Base44 MCP server to Claude Code and approve sandbox access when prompted.
- Work in Claude Code. Every change saves to the sandbox immediately and shows up in the Base44 live preview. Publishing is still a separate click in Base44.
The catch, verified on docs.base44.com on 2026-10-09: reaching the sandbox from outside the editor needs the Builder plan or higher ($40/month billed annually, $50 monthly). On Starter the commands fail with a PREMIUM_REQUIRED error.
Route 2: GitHub 2-way sync, then Claude Code locally (the full Base44 export code guide covers the limits). Connect the app to a GitHub repo, clone it, run base44 dev for a local backend and frontend, and let Claude Code edit the repo like any other project. Changes sync back to Base44. Two things to know:
- It needs the Builder plan or higher too. Base44's local development docs say, in those words, that GitHub 2-way sync requires the Builder plan or higher. The pricing page agrees: GitHub integration is listed on Builder, Pro and Elite, not on Starter. We have seen older third-party posts claim Starter; as of October 2026 the docs do not.
- Sync cannot be paused: an app is either connected to its repository or disconnected, and the docs describe how to disconnect. A workspace admin also chooses whether everyone commits through one shared GitHub connection (the default) or each member connects their own account so commits carry their name.
What stays on Base44 either way: the backend. Database, auth, file storage and integrations run on Base44's platform. Claude Code can edit your frontend, your backend functions and your entity definitions, but your app still lives on Base44, and your credits still pay for it to run. If your goal is to leave Base44 entirely, this workflow gets you the code, not the hosting.
The honest cost of "both": Builder at $40/month annually plus Claude Pro at $17/month annually, about $57 a month. For a solo builder shipping a real product, that is cheaper than one hour of a contract developer.
What you give up each way
Going Base44 only: polish. The chat is excellent at the first 80% and slower on the last 20%, which is where credits disappear on rework. We cover that fairly in Is Base44 legit?.
Going Claude Code only: the week you spend on things that are not your product. Auth. Hosting. A database. Email. Base44 ships all of that on the free plan.
Going both: $57 a month and two tools to learn. Worth it only if you will actually open the terminal. If not, stay on Starter.
Verdict: is Base44 or Claude Code better?
If you have never written code and your goal is a working business tool, Base44 is better, and it is not close. Start free, pay $16/month annually when the credits run out.
If you are a developer, Claude Code is better, and it is not close either. Base44 would feel like a cage within a week.
If you are in the middle, you are the person this page was written for. Build in Base44 today. The day the chat cannot do what you need, upgrade to Builder, press Send to Coding Agent, and let Claude Code finish it. You get the speed of one and the ceiling of the other.

Frequently asked questions
Is Base44 or Claude Code better?
For non-coders who want a finished, hosted app, Base44. For developers who want full control of real code, Claude Code. Many builders use both: prototype in Base44, then connect Claude Code on Base44's Builder plan to finish the hard parts.
Can I use Claude Code with Base44?
Yes. Base44's docs name Claude Code as a supported local agent. You connect it to the app's cloud sandbox through the Base44 CLI or MCP server, or through GitHub two-way sync. Both routes require the Builder plan ($40 a month billed annually) or higher as of October 2026.
Which Base44 plan do I need to export code to GitHub?
Builder or higher, as of October 2026. Base44's local development docs state that GitHub two-way sync requires the Builder plan, and the pricing page lists GitHub integration on Builder, Pro and Elite, not Starter.
How much does Claude Code cost?
Claude Code is included with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually), Max (from $100 a month), Team and Enterprise plans, each with usage limits. You can also pay per token through the API, for example Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. It does not include hosting or a database.
Is Base44 cheaper than Claude Code?
At the entry level they are close: Base44 Starter is $16 a month annually, Claude Pro is $17. But Base44's price includes hosting, a database and logins, while with Claude Code you still need to supply and pay for those yourself.
Can Claude Code build a full app like Base44 does?
Yes, if you can set up and run the surrounding pieces: a repo, a database, authentication and hosting. Claude Code writes the code; it does not host or run your app. Base44 provides all of that out of the box.
Does Base44 use Claude under the hood?
Base44 routes each prompt to the AI models it considers best for the task and lets paid users on Builder and above choose a model manually. Base44 does not publish which vendor powers each task, so we do not claim it.
